Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) can be downloaded for free, but only until 20 August 2009.
If you haven’t done so yet, and you read this post within a day of my writing it, then you can still download a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate for evaluation.
It is a full version of Windows, without restriction, but it is time-limited. Besides the need to download it by 20 August, the operating system will become barely usable in March 2010, and completely inoperative on 1 June 2010.
So this is a great chance to give Windows 7 a complete and fair evaluation, but you can not use it as your primary operating system, unless you plan to buy the new operating system when it comes out, and replace your RC installation with that.
I am using the Windows 7 RC on a secondary computer, and I like it quite a bit. There are still a couple of techniques I use in Windows XP to increase my efficiency, which I have not learned how to duplicate in Windows 7, but I’m sure there is a way.
As I use Windows 7 more, I will put more effort into some of these issues.
I suggest you download the RC while you still can, so you can see and decide for yourself if the new operating system is worth upgrading to.
If you are a Vista user, the answer is probably yes. If you are an XP user, like me, the decision is less clear.
I have to say, so far I love Windows 7. But you have to decide for yourself, and now’s the time to do it.
For info about the download, see Windows 7 Free Download Available Until 20 August 2009.
