Windows 7 will be available in a family pack. Microsoft announced the new pricing structure on their blog on 21 July 2009.
Many households have more than one PC, and this is a great way for those who want to be on the cutting edge to have all their computers up to date.
It is ideal for individuals with more than one computer. You may want to upgrade, but many people will think twice before paying full price per machine to upgrade several of their desktops and laptops.
The family pack will be available in “selected markets” (what ever that means – surely online ordering makes the whole world a “selected market).
A Windows 7 family pack will consist of Windows 7 Home Premium and a license to install it on up to three different machines.
Microsoft has not disclosed the actual price for the family pack.
This is good news, although anyone who pre-paid for the discount version may be irritated if the family pack is sufficiently attractive.
It is unfortunate that Microsoft has not announced a family pack for its more advanced operating systems for small offices or more advanced home settings. The Pro and ultimate versions have a number of attractive features, such as a virtual Windows XP emulator to run legacy software, and remote desktop (perfect to run your home entertainment system from another computer in the house).
Microsoft does say on their blog to watch out for other “potential offers”, so they may be offering higher end versions of the operating system in some sort of package attractive to small offices.
