Windows 7 Multiple Version Distribution

Windows 7 versions

Windows 7 will be distributed with multiple versions on a single DVD, according to rumors flying around the net.

The screen shot shown here is supposedly from Windows 7 build 7025. It shows part of the installation process where the user is to select the version of Windows they are installing.

There is no guarantee that this screen shot is legit, or that the multi-version distribution is for real.

It seems like a rather confusing way to distribute the software.  Imaging buying a particular version of the operating system, only to find that you could try and install some other version instead.  Imaging accidentally choosing the wrong version, then experiencing endless frustration as you type in the license key, and are asked to put in your credit card to pay for the upgrade!

Speculators assume that this multi version distribution is an attempt to encourage consumers to upgrade their operating system by simply paying for a license key online, direct from Microsoft.

There are pros and cons to this approach from the consumer’s point of view.

It would be convenient to have all versions of the operating system on one disc, and then purchase license as needed for different machines.

Also, you could buy a lower grade than you think you might need, then upgrade later if you find it necessary.

On the other hand, it could lead to endless confusion.  Normally what you install matches what you paid for.  But in this scenario, you would have to be sure to choose the correct version, the one that matches the license you paid for.

Some less savvy users may run into roadblocks on this one.

It would seem to make sense that Windows 7 could use the license key you enter to figure out what version to install, as this could be encoded into the key without having to check if the key is actually valid.

Any other ideas?
